An online gathering to explore the mythology of the Grail in the British tradition
What do the myths and legends of the Grail tell us what our ancestors believed about the meaning of life, and the underlying order of the cosmos?
The collection of old stories which form the mystery of the Grail arguably represent the foundational mythology of Britain. Many scholars and popular writers have speculated about the meaning of the Grail, but the clearest clues are hidden in plain sight in the oldest stories of all. And so we’ll delve into the earliest known origins of the Grail myth in Old Irish texts, and explore its development in the context of ‘The Matter of Britain’: a body of medieval literature and legendary material associated with King Arthur. We’ll see how the story was transformed in the medieval European romances, and understand how the Grail came to be thought of as ‘holy’.
Throughout, we’ll pay particular attention to the powerful and magical women who play such a fundamental part in the mythology of the Grail, from the Grail Messengers to the Keeprs of the Grail.
how it works
Our gathering took place via Zoom, in a format which enabled us to enjoy each other’s faces, and to break out into discussion groups to deepen our connections with other participants. Our gathering included story, teachings, participant discussion groups, a dance/movement session and creative prompts.
